We welcome you to join Samba Nova!

We welcome new band members whether experienced musicians or aspiring musicians or people who have always wanted to try. We’re very accessible and open and patient. The band ranges from 15-30 people depending on the season and we perform annually at various parades, festivals, and events. Some of our pieces are very traditional and others highlight some funky beats.

Our season spans September until the end of July. We welcome new members at anytime. We practice weekly on Tuesdays from 7:00pm- 8:30pm at St. Matthews Church on Barrington Street in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Please show up 10-15mins early each week to get setup before we begin practice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to have any musical experience to join?

Nope! Just a basic sense of rhythm and a desire to learn.

We’ve had players from 7 to our now gone loved member at over 80 years. It’s not a great environment for kids due to the volume and the need to pay attention for long periods of time. That being said, we welcome everyone!

No need! The band uses traditional samba bateria instruments and we supply all the gear.

People have busy lives; we get that, so no of course you don’t have to attend every practice but if you want to perform you should attend as many as it takes to learn your part. Keep in mind it takes a certain critical mass to make a samba band work so some degree of commitment is important for your band-mates.

You are welcome to perform with us if you like after you have learned the performance pieces. People tend to self-assess whether or not they’re ready, and for major gigs the leaders will let you know if you can join us on stage.

Oh yeahhh… BUT we have earplugs and most people bring their own each week as well.

The first time is free and it’s $10 a week after that.

To T-shirts, gear, and leaders fees. We are a non-profit organization with a balanced budget.

We supply shirts for people who perform but you’re on your own for the white pants.
